Dementia-friendly walks at Wakehurst

Wakehurst invites people living with dementia on an accessible guided walk to explore the gardens through sight, smell and touch. Led by our expert volunteers, you will learn about the wonderful plants, people and places that make up Wakehurst.

When: Last Tuesday of every month. 11am-12pm.

Where: Tours start by the plant center at the front of the visitor reception entrance. A Wakehurst staff member will meet you there.

How to register: Free entry and parking for Community Access Scheme and Wakehurst members. Register by emailing wakehurstcommunity@kew.org or calling 01444 894066 (ask for The Participation Team). Non-members may attend but will be charged entry and parking.

Time frame : Walks last one hour and are open to those with dementia plus their families, friends and carers.

What can you expect?

  • Seasoned guide will lead all around the gardens’ accessible areas, highlighting interesting flora, fauna, and historical facts about Wakehurst.
  • During the walk, volunteers will engage you and your group with interactive activities and provide sensory resources for your groups to hold, feel, share, and take home as a reminder of their visit.
  • Don’t worry; they also have wet weather plans and activities for rainy days!
  • The team loves a natter and will happily chat along with your group. The friendly, dementia-trained volunteers will help visitors feel comfortable and relaxed, follow their thoughts, and support guests around the gardens.

Your first visit, including parking, is completely free, but they would like you to consider joining the Community Access Scheme (CAS); please look at the link below and let us know if you would like to join up for a repeat visit.
