Town twinning exists to promote friendship between people of different countries through personal and cultural links. Every year a group from Crawley visits Dorsten or a group from Dorsten comes to Crawley. They pay their own travel expenses but when in Germany they stay with a German family as non-paying guests and visits are arranged to places of interest in the area. The following year they act as hosts to the German guests.
Exchanges can also be arranged between clubs and societies such as sports clubs, choirs or orchestras. The Crawley-Dorsten link has been in existence since 1973 and many strong friendships have been built up during this time.
Dorsten
Crawley’s Twin Town of Dorsten is in Germany close to the Rhine and only 40km from the Dutch border. Dorsten lies on the edge of the
extensive Hohe Mark Country Park, in the rich pastoral landscape just north of the Ruhr (Germany’s main industrial belt). The River Lippe flows through the town and its 11 neighbourhoods are separated by large areas of woodland and open fields. Founded in 1251, Dorsten has preserved remnants of the old city wall but, like Crawley, it is an expanding town with a variety of light industry and many commuters. The population is
slightly less than that of Crawley. With its Altstadt (old town) and modern shopping precinct, the pedestrianised town centre proudly combines
old and new. Local farmers hold a colourful weekly market in front of the picturesque Old Town Hall and large Market Church.
