Established 30 years ago, Turning Tides is a multifunctional, complex needs homelessness charity. Their mission is to end local homelessness. They have gone from supporting a handful of people in the coastal town of Worthing to providing a range of services to over 1,700 people in Worthing, Adur, Littlehampton, Horsham and Mid Sussex. They have over 10,000 supporters, 300 volunteers and 160 staff members to date.

The Role

Following a successful partnership bid with Horsham District and Mid Sussex Councils to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) Rough Sleeper Initiative, They are seeking to recruit an Outreach Worker for Mid Sussex (MSOW).

There is a relatively low but a very significant level of rough sleeping, street community and single homelessness in Mid Sussex. Those who have worked with vulnerable individuals in this local area confirmed those known to be rough sleeping generally have a high level of complex needs and are often resistant to engage with services, as well as those facing chronic social exclusion in the community who may be vulnerably housed.

Based primarily in Hayward’s Heath but must be able to travel throughout the district, the MSOW will lead on assessing and supporting rough sleepers, building rapport and developing relationships with those who have been hard to engage with, the overall aim will be to end the need for local people to sleep rough. The MSOW will work in close partnership with the Mid Sussex District Homelessness Prevention team, ensuring single homeless individuals can access relevant support from the council.

This is an opportunity to make a real difference to vulnerable people’s lives within communities through developing  outreach capacity and offer in Mid Sussex.
