Chagossian Community Liaison Officer

Citizen’s Advice West Sussex (CAWS) seeks a Community Liaison Officer to support Crawley’s Chagossian Community, to build trust and ensure access to information, advice and specialist help is available where needed.

Responsibilities involve collaborating with the communications team and specialist advisers, working in Crawley with migrant communities, and engaging with community members in settings or channels that they are comfortable with, building trust and identifying advice and advocacy needs.

An understanding of community life and a passion to reduce inequalities through community engagement and development is important, and you will proactively be sharing information and make referrals to specialists who can advise on immigration, welfare benefits, domestic abuse and much more.

About You:

You will have excellent communication skills and quickly build a positive rapport with the Chagossian Community to support and encourage them towards advice. You will be confident and able to work independently in new locations, working around the Crawley area. Demonstrating an extensive understanding of the barriers faced, you will be able to easily engage with the community leaders and be able to identify concerns, working with the community to overcome any barriers.

The ideal candidate will have had experience of undertaking different research methods, writing professional reports and working with external organisations. However comprehensive training will be available for the right candidate. The ability to speak Mauritian Creole and English is desirable, together with experience in report writing.
